Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is a term used for training or in class to subjectively assess how hard you feel like your body is working. It is based on the physical sensations a person experiences during physical activity, including increased heart rate, increased respiration or breathing rate, increased sweating, and muscle fatigue.
Gunnar Borg, a Swedish researcher developed the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) using a 1-20 scale. For class we use a modified version that is a 1-10 scale which can be seen below.
